If you are a human being, you have biases — based on race, gender, sexual orientation, body shape and size, religion, height, and a host of other things. Despite our best intentions and without our self-awareness, they are the associations that creep into our thinking, and the implicit biases we hold often don’t line up with our stated beliefs. These biases can affect how we view and treat other people, and have serious, real-world implications.

Join C2ST for a program that explores unconscious gender bias and how gender bias influences many aspects of life: from school to the workplace, government to social media, and more. A panel of experts will discuss growing your awareness of gender bias, propose actionable solutions at the individual and societal levels, and take a look at the innovative solutions coming out of startups and corporations.

Monday, November 13th, 2017. 1871, 222 W. Merchandise Mart Plaza #1212, Chicago IL, 60654. Doors open at 5:30 pm, program starts at 6 pm. The panel discussion will be followed by a wine and cheese reception where audience members can meet the speakers and discuss the evening’s themes with other attendees.

The CTA Brown and Purple lines stop in the building. Take the center elevator up to the 12th floor. Merchandise Mart is also within easy walking distance of all other major CTA lines. Panelists

Anna Kaatz, PhD

Anna Kaatz, PhD is the Director of Computational Sciences at the UW-Madison Center for Women’s Health Research. As a data scientist at the nexus of research on scientific workforce diversity and stereotype-based bias, Dr. Kaatz is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop novel tools and technologies to study and address reasons for female and racial/ethnic minority scientists’ underrepresentation in science and medical research careers. Broadly, current projects involve development of curriculum to help women and minority scientists advance to leadership; development of data- and text-mining algorithms to test for race and gender bias in NIH’s peer review process; and development of interventions, including role-playing video games, to reduce race and gender bias in medical schools, universities, and high school settings.

Irina Konstantinovsky

Irina Konstantinovsky is the executive vice president & chief human resources officer at Horizon Pharma. She is responsible for attracting, developing, engaging and retaining the talent required for business success and fostering an inclusive and engaging culture that ensures innovation and growth. Prior to joining Horizon, Irina spent 5 years at Baxter International as the vice president of global talent where she led Inclusion & Diversity, Talent Acquisition, Leadership Development, Talent Management and Organization Effectiveness, and 15 years at Tower Watson. Irina has a track record as a strategic business leader, innovative CHRO, global talent management expert and organizational consultant. Irina holds two masters degrees from Cornell University.

Dorri McWhorter

Dorri McWhorter, CEO, YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, is transforming the 140-year-old social service agency to a 21st century social enterprise. Dorri is moving the agency into the digital age with technical training for youth (TechGYRLS) and adults (3D: Developing Digital Diversity). In addition, the YWCA has launched two web-based services with its own e-commerce site, YShop.org, and the womenshealthexchange.org to provide health insurance and information to women and their families. Dorri was included in the inaugural list of “The Blue Network”, comprised of the top 100 innovators in Chicago, by Chicago Tribune’s Blue Sky Innovation.

He is a member of Mayor Emanuel’s Chicago NEXT and Cultural Affairs Councils; the Innovate Illinois Advisory and Arts Councils; a member of President Preckwinkle’s New Media Council; an Adjunct Professor at Kellogg; and an advisor to many start-ups.
